| Creatine kinase is an enzyme secreted into the bloodstream by muscle tissue throughout the body. It is used as a marker of heart attack, severe muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), muscular dystrophy, and kidney disease.
Instructions Fasting is not required for this test. Take all medications as prescribed. Because exercise involves muscle breakdown and repair, it could falsely elevate creatine kinase blood levels. For this reason, we suggest that you do not engage in strenuous exercise for approximately 48 hours prior to the blood draw. Note This test measures the total amount of creatine kinase in the blood but does not measure the individual subtypes. |
